Tips On How To Keep Pets Out Of Your Garbage Bin

Blog

Whether it's your cat or the neighborhood dogs, pets digging into your garbage bin to look for food scraps can litter your home and attract pests such as raccoons and termites. Pets can also get sick if they eat trashed food that's contaminated with bacteria. How do you keep these animals out of your bin until the next garbage pickup day? Here are some easy tips that you can follow to keep your exterior space clean and protect your pet's health.

Hire a heavy duty bin

If your pets and others in the neighborhood occasionally knock down your bin and spill the contents, the best option is to hire a heavy duty bin from a company like The Garbage Gurus. Ask your skip hire company if they have ones that can't topple over when knocked by an average dog or cat. Once you get a heavy duty bin, make sure that you place it on level ground. Having it on a slope will increase its chances of falling over. If the bin has handles, you can secure it by using stakes and rope. Drive stakes into the ground and run the rope through the handles and the stakes. The bin should stand firmly on the ground even when disturbed by pets.

Get rid of food smells

Pets go ravaging skip bins when they smell food in them; therefore, if you throw out food scraps, it is essential to get rid of the smell. You can do this using some simple homemade solutions. The most convenient one is the liquid soap used for laundry or doing dishes. Spray the liquid into the bin and also on any food containers that you have thrown out. You can also make a solution using water and a bleaching product and spray it into the garbage. This will get rid of the food small and deter pets from digging in your trash.

Keep the lid closed

Investing in a garbage bin that comes with a lid is critical if you want to keep animals out of the trash. However, this is may not be a good enough deterrent if the pets are capable of lifting the lid with their paws.  You should have an anchor on top of the lid to protect it from being opened. The best item to use is a concrete block or a log of wood. Place it at the center of the lid to keep it closed at all times. Make sure that the anchor doesn't damage the lid as the bin hire company may charge you for it.
